“…existing in more than one languages can feel a lot like existing with more than one personality.”
This quote really resonated with me in the article. I grew up speaking Dutch at home, English at school and then whatever the native language was of the country we were living in at the time. The author of this article points out that perception often alters when speaking a different language but it was interesting to note that there may also be a shift in morality when speaking a different language. Having this understanding of bilingual and multi-linguists will give an opportunity for global awareness. Let us try to imagine what the Au Pairs must feel like as they are navigating 2 (and often more) languages in a very unfamiliar setting. A truly eye-opening article with references to books that are worth checking out to gain an even better understanding.
