Au pair Celeste from South Africa, is spending her program year in Jaqui Collier’s St. Louis, Missouri cluster.
“I had lots of fun doing my presentation at my host kids school. I presented to about 17 kids in the 1st grade and they were so excited to learn about my home country South Africa. I first started off by talking about where I live in my country, and my family. The fun things you can do there, about the people, and food. We spoke on many different topics from the colors on the flag to what it represents and I mentioned the animals in South Africa and most importantly I brought up the topic about the big 5, I let the kids play a little guessing game with me in which they guess what animals they think are the big 5.
I asked them tons of questions to keep them active and intrigued in learning about South Africa. I brought South African money and art bead work to show them which they found to be really cool and fascinating. I didn’t want to just talk for a long period of time so I got lots of crafts for the kids to do and have fun. We painted South African animals and the kids enjoyed all the other activities I had planned for them. I taught them to speak some words in Afrikaans and I also went through some interesting facts about South Africa. After the presentation was over I gave each kid treats to say thank you for having me. Overall, it was an amazing experience, the kids and I enjoyed every minute of it.”
