Peace

What is peace? Everyone has their own definition of peace. It varies from person to person, culture as well as religion. According to the dictionary, peace (noun) is described as the following:

1. Freedom from disturbance; tranquility.

2. A state or period in which there is no war or a war has ended.

Ever since my childhood years, peace was what I’ve always yearned for. Peace at school, peace at home, peace at work, peace at church, etc. Although I never knew the real or true definition of peace, I knew it was a feeling of calmness. I’ve also learned that there’s so much more to peace than what we ought it to be. Peace starts with yourself! It starts from within. Ever heard/listened to the song “Man in the mirror” sung by Michael Jackson? No? Let’s take a closer look at the lyrics;

“I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways. And no message could have been any clearer. If you want to make this world a better place, take a look at yourself then make a change.”

The last sentence in the chorus of this song really stuck with me when I listened to this song for the first time a couple of years ago. I definitely agree with this song. If we want to make this world a better place by living in peace with one another, we should face the mirror and start with the person staring back at us. We should be the change we want to see in this world. Another well-known quote we should ought to be.

Peace to me is such a powerful word. Even in the Bible God is referred to as a Peaceful God (Judges 6:24). God alone is the source of peace. My religion is really important to me. Prayer and the Word of God is how I find my peace from within.

In every culture or religion, everyone has their own definition of peace, but one thing’s for sure – When we stop being conformists in this world and make the decision to choose the road less traveled by, we will be the change we want to see in this world.
