It’s the 12th day of Christmas and we are going right here in the United States. Many of our au pairs may get to experience The Feast of the Seven Fishes.
On Christmas Eve, according to the Roman Catholic custom of abstinence from meat and dairy products on the eve of certain holidays, Italian-Americans eat a seven-course seafood meal! The number seven is connected to multiple Catholic symbols.
Although this is a tradition celebrated by Italian-Americans, unless you are from Southern Italy, many Italians have never even heard of it. This has mainly to do with the fact that there are 20 regions in Italy each with their own Christmas Eve food traditions.
