The Chinese school year begins in early September with a formal opening ceremony that emphasizes respect, discipline, and national pride. Students gather for a flag-raising ceremony, sing the national anthem, listen to speeches from school leaders, and at some schools enjoy student performances as well. Many schools have also brought back an ancient "First Lesson" ceremony, also known as Qi Meng (meaning Enlightenment).This special program is highly symbolic and designed to inspire students as they begin the new academic year.
