Easter Around the World

Easter in Finland
Children in Finland decorate Easter eggs and make Easter cards just like the kids in the U.S.A. do. But did you know that they also grow grass on plates indoors?

On Palm Sunday, children dress up as Easter witches and go from door to door with sprigs of willow in their hands. They recite a special verse and are given sweets or money.

Egg Painting in Hungary

easter eggsThere are many ways to do this, but one simple way is to partially wrap a cooked egg in a leaf and dip it in colored water. The covered part of the egg remains white and will show the pattern of the leaf. Natural paints can be made from onion skin, wild pear, green walnuts or other vegetables.Sometimes the women “write" on the egg, drawing folk patterns using melted wax on the egg and then dipping into the colored water. The egg under the wax remains white and shows the pattern. The most beautiful eggs are painted by hand following traditional folk patterns.
